That is quite a dig at his fellow conservative, John McCain - the leading Republican presidential hopeful, by U.S. conservative pundit Pat Buchanan. Cheney, as you know, is considered a hawk - some would say a war monger - in the Bush administration. So likening Cheney to Gandhi who practised and preached non-violence all his life, is like comparing night with day. But that is the whole point of Buchanan’s dig.

While McCain have made some quite hawkish statements, particularly about the war such as bombing Iran etc. - I think he said, “Bomb Iran. Bomb, bomb, bomb” or something similar; I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Although anything is possible in any election, I don’t think Americans are going to elect a Republican as their president this time around; be it McCain or anybody else. Most American voters do not seem to have much faith in Republicans at this point in time. This is borne by the fact that while record number of voters have been participating in Democratic primaries the same is not true of the Republicans.

Even if McCain does get elected, the realities of the world, including the precarious state of the American economy, would force him to moderate his views and actions on war and he won’t make Cheney look like Gandhi. :-)

As we all know too well, what politicians say during election speeches doesn’t necessarily translate into action. And if McCain really carries out his war agenda then the consequences for the world will indeed be disastrous as starting a war is easy and it’s outcome is always unpredictable.
